N5 Partners with CAL FIRE Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) team to Deploy Wildfire Detection System

“N5 Sensors is excited to partner with the CAL FIRE Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) team in exploring the effectiveness of N5SHIELDTM – N5’s wildfire monitoring solution for the detection of smoke, gas, humidity, temperature and other indicators of fire and potentially hazardous conditions.

A crucial aspect of the research is real-world, practical deployments and tests – in other words, proving if the solution works in California, and learning how to improve and refine it. Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF) has an important research mission for CAL FIRE and
organizations across the state,
and is a fantastic environment for these activities, offering dense forest (meaning limited sunlight for solar-powered devices), varying elevation, and minimal LTE/cellular connectivity – all key challenges for a deployment of a network of inter-connected sensors. Recently, the N5 and RDI team had the opportunity to collaborate and deploy several of these N5 sensors in JDSF in a variety of locations and have begun receiving valuable data. The system continuously monitors the situation in the forest and is programmed to send SMS alerts if any anomalies are detected. The N5 team gathered valuable information from the visit and is extremely grateful to the RDI team, JDSF team, the MEU forestry team and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate SCITI Labs program for their assistance with this endeavor.

N5 has furthered the development of the N5SHIELD system through working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate SCITI Labs program, an initiative built in collaboration with the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC), TechNexus and Smart City Works to focus on applying new and existing technologies to public safety and national security needs.
